A few years back I had the notion of creating a devotional based on the little snippets of wisdom found inside fortune cookies. The idea stemmed from a conversation I had with my closest friend about the concept that all truth is Gods truth. A concept which challenged my thinking while taking a course in Theology and Film from Dr. Robert Johnston, a professor at Fuller Theological and author of "Reel Spirituality". Dr. Johnston asserted to our class that film was the modern story telling apparatus, and that any truth found in a story was Gods truth. He is truth, and in a world of post modern interpretations of the word we should embrace His presence where and when we find it. I have come to whole hearted agreement with Dr. Johnston. The Lord and His wisdom are regularly present in words and writings that are far from church, and have no direct correlation to the bible.
Enter "Pho 20"on Broadway street in Galveston, Tx. A restaurant which is a regular in the rotation of mine and my previously mentioned friends lunch outings. (In fact "regular" is an insufficient description. We go there a lot, we even have our own table). Pho 20 does a lot of things well including the distinctly Americanized experience of asian cuisine, which should always include disposable chop sticks and fortune cookies. Fortune cookies in particular have provided us with lots of discussion material, and given their bland taste; novelty and discussion are their greatest contribution to the meal. These little cellophane armored truth tanks have often generated profound conversation and of course some laughter. At certain times, knowing the various trials and successes God is taking us trough we have "swapped" fortunes as an encouragement and recognition of "where we are right now". Out of this experience the idea to explore "all truth is Gods truth" through the lens of fortune cookies and conversation this blog/devotional has emerged. (Is Blogvotional a word? It is now)
My aim is to post one fortune cookie and a corresponding devotional a week with a purpose of encouraging you (the reader) toward a greater grasp of Gods love for you. He really does love us and like a good father leaves crumbs of wisdom for us to find, be encouraged by, and act on as we live and overcome. Because I love the bible, the post will usually include scripture that corresponds to the words from the cookie. This wont always be the case though as this blog isn't intended to be a theological treatise on anything; just and observation of Father, Son, and Holy Spirits presence and love in our day to day living.
Last but not least; please, please, please feel free to comment and leave questions, and of course share these posts however you like. Also, feel the freedom to share your own fortune cookie stories! It would be wonderful encouragement to hear how Gods truth shows up in the every day for you!
Much love and blessings to you all,
Ken
